SAN JOSE VOLCANO, 5 856 m

San José is an immense volcano in the Andes Mountain Range, which is three hours from Santiago. Its great size amazes us as we ascend the altitudes of the Cajón del Maipo.

This volcano is surrounded by a landscape of mountains from 4000 to 6000 meters, such as its great neighbor Marmolejo Mount, 6108 meters. From the slopes and summit of San José we can take in amazing glaciers, green valleys and spectacular sunsets. To reach the volcano, we will make an approximation trekking through the Engorda valley crossing brooks and following a meandering track which leads us to Base Camp and the area of Plantat refuge.

This ascent demands great physical effort and altitude experience. The weather conditions can test the most experienced mountaineer. Without a doubt, San José Volcano is a great challenge and a classic peak for national and international mountaineers. It is today one of the acclimatization peaks for Aconcagua and Ojos del Salado.
